 "Great Bike" 2008-10-31

They say you get what you pay for, I got far more. Great value. The one issue I did have was a scratch on the bar end and Cycle Force Group sent me a new one the next day.

"A good bike if you don't pay top dollar" 2008-01-02
By Some Guy (Palm Bay, FL USA)
You have to consider the overall value in terms of price vs. benefit. Is this bike a good deal? Depends on how much you pay.

Depending on the mood and timing of Amazon, I have seen this bike (brand new Smith and Wesson Tactical including shipping) range from 830 to the 330 price I got just before Christmas 2007.

I rank it a reasonable buy at up to 500. Most of the bike is great quality from the frame to the components, so I'll mention the disappointments:

-The rack is some 3rd party cheapy with enough adjustments to fit about any bike out there...to some degree. Because of some interferences on the S&W, the rack has to be adjusted to a higher position than should be necessary. The net result is a high center of gravity, cargo height limitations with the seat, and many adjustment joints to work loose.

-The seat must be off of a tractor.

-The pedals have pseudo toe clips that are useless. They actually have no provisions for straps, just a plastic tow piece that is too flimsy to pull up on.

-The tires are fat street tires with enough cosmetic features on the sides to trick the eye into thinking they're mountain bike tires.

-The initial adjustments were far off on both deralures and the disk brake. It took me a couple of extra hours to get it working right (it does works very well after the adjustments).

I'm happy with it considering the price I paid. I wouldn't pay more than 500. Shopping around will give you better deals above that price.

"A few words about bicycles in a box." 2007-09-15
By G. Stewart (San Diego, CA)
First of all to all those who complain about the ambiguity of the included instructions when under-taking assembly of a bike delivered in a box to their front door, may not really be up to the task. Frankly I found the owner's manual of the Smith & Wesson bike to be refreshingly specific to the bike in question. Most all bike manuals are a " lube this, tighten that " generalized instruction blurb. In fact I never bother to look at them, bikes are inherently simple, and a person must have the proper bike tools to address a bike in a box requirements...such as wheel truing, headset adjustment, derailleur set-up, brake-pad positioning, cable lubing, and on & on. Something a small manual cannot instill in a person, it has to be there in the person already. That person has to be perpared to take the responsibility of the hazards involved in rolling a bike down the street, especially if they are looking for a great deal on the bike, price-wise. And they take responsibility by knowing what they are doing before they pop the first copper staple out of the bike box.

That said there are challenges that await. The rear wheel of this particular sample required truing, the star nut and headset preload bolt were mysteriously missing, the brake cables were not in their proper levers. Outside of that everything seems " copacetic "... fine & dandy. Amazon sold me this for great great price so I'm not going to fuss too much, the missing headset bolt was disconserting, mainly alleviated by a FSA Conix starnut replacement (no longer made), and I can certainly understand why the cables got turned around...packing a handlebar in a box off the headset is a little tricky... if you don't want to kink the cables.

This bike exudes authority, but it is a bike designed for " Clydesdales " ie cops on doughnuts. And if you don't have a problem with the words " Smith & Wesson " then you should ride it proudly. Paint-job is well done and comes with two " S & W " water bottles so you can really go to town showing off their logo. Rims are 36 hole downhill rims, so they may last you awhile. Full SRAM build kit, Formula hubs, all from Taiwan I suspect. Taiwan used to build Breezer bikes, the ones to his claim to fame. Go to his Website if you want a better bicycle manual.

So I thank-you, Amazon, your comrade Cycle Source Group who markets S & W bikes, and you the reader for getting through this.

"Nice, but not a $1000 plus bike" 2009-08-25
By Some Guy (Palm Bay, FL USA)
If you shop around enough, you can probably find bikes in the $700 range that are better deals. In fact, you may want to consider if it is worth paying $700 for what is essentially a very high quality comfort bike since it is not fully configured as a real mountain bike as pointed out by another reviewer (It could be for about $75 in swapouts).

The derailleurs, brakes, shifters, and fork (Rockshox Dart 3) are high points. The frame is ok and the wheels are sturdy. Most the other components are merely acceptable. They appear to be manufactured generically and painted in as many places as possible with the Smith & Wesson name or logo. Although S&W is not a recognized factor in the bicycle world, I guess the belief is the more S&W logos the more appeal to those that own other S&W items. I count at least 13 on the bike.

The disappointments I have come across are attention to detail for a bike in this price range. The threads in the frame bosses seem to be weak and poorly threaded. I couldn't attach one of the included bottle holders with the included screws because they were too short, also, I think one of the rear rack bosses is close to being stripped. The rear brake cable is fully sheathed (insteaded of being bare cable along the frame as the other cables) and not well attached. This adds weight and clangs on the down tube when going over even minor bumps. It must be an easy way for the manufacture to switch between the Custom and the Smith & Wesson Tactical Police Mountain Bike models, since they have the same frame but different rear brakes.

The rack is not very good; I replaced it with a Topeak Explorer Bike Rack (because of the way the rear disk brake is mounted on this bike, you don't need to get a rack specially made for disk brakes; the included rack certainly wasn't).

Don't pay more that $700 and consider either a more-consistently equipped mountain bike, a comfort bike, or a hybrid. This bike kind of jumbles these objectives in an expensive package.

 "Bad experience" 2007-12-06
By G. Morris (Silver Spring, Maryland United States)
Ordered the S&W Custom Police Bike and they sent the S&W Perimiter Police Bike. Had to return it for credit seeing they refused to replace bike with the one that was ordered. I will always check to see who I am dealing with when making purchases from amazon and be carefull not to deal with Fogdog ever again.

The customer service at Fogdog were polite and helpful, not their fault the order system was screwed up.

 "clydesdale bike" 2007-11-05
By garyyager (Suwanee, GA United States)
This is a hard core mountain bike built strong for big guys, that unfortunately has been tamed for the city. It's set up for an upright riding position; the frame has a slightly shorter top tube and it a high rise stem. The tires are semi-slicks designed for road / light trail use. But it's heart is a serious mountain bike. It built of high end off-road components (X.9 drive train, avid disc brakes, Chris King headset, truvativ cranks and a rockshox dart 3 fork). The wheelsets are super strong.

It's easy to unleash it's potential. Replace the the slick tires. Replace the high rise stem with a longer, low rise one. Lose the rack and kickstand. Add some clipless pedals and it's a serious off-road bike.

"Nice bike, loaded with features" 2007-05-02
By sid6581 (New York, USA)
This is the first bike I've had in about 12 years. After getting over the sticker shock of "adult bikes" I spent weeks researching the many options. It immediately became clear that no matter what bike I got, I'd still probably end up spending hundreds more to customize it with the components I wanted. That is, until I found this one on Amazon for a really great price with free shipping.

THE GOOD:

The components on this bike alone (Sram shifters/derailers, Avid disc brakes) are all top of the line and could easily add up to what I paid if purchased separately. The two water bottles and rear rack are a nice touch. The adjustable front suspension makes for a comfortable ride. If you are a hardcore mountain biker this bike probably isn't for you - but you already knew that. These are the same bikes used by many police forces so I am fairly confident it will hold up to the minimal punishment that I deliver.

THE BAD:

1. The assembly instructions are lousey. They are too generic and look like could be for a different bike. They seem to assume that you already know what all of the parts are and how they work. It took me longer than expected to assemble, but it wasn't too bad. The company does provide a technical support number and, to their credit, the folks there were very helpful. One of my shifters was broken in shipping so they sent me a new one right away, no questions asked.

2. My only other complaint is about the kick stand. It is a piece of junk. There are two bolts that go through a plate and just clamp it on to the frame tubing. Square plate clamped on to rounded tubing = bad idea. I have found myself tightening it up about ten times now because it starts to slip and eventually gets to an angle that can't hold the bike up properly. Seriousl, I think the manufacturer could have come up with a better design here.

Overall I think this bike is a great value. It's got everything I need and is built with (mostly) quality components. I did end up buying a bunch of accessories after the fact but nothing I wouldn't have had to get for any bike (air pump, patch kit, etc). I look forward to enjoying it when the weather gets nicer.

"A "real" police bike-good features, low price" 2009-09-10
By Jason Nabors (Murfreesboro, TN USA)
I got the camo one, which is a bargain at $100 less than the black and white model. A lot of these are out there. Either the police didn't like the camo color, or perhaps it's just because the recession has police departments across the country cutting back on purchases. The S&W bikes are probably the nicest products made by Cycle Force Group. You're getting real bike store quality components like Kenda tires, SRAM shifters, etc. The price is higher than big box store bikes but less than the entry level bikes at bike stores with quality comparable to bikes costing at least $500. After reading the reviews, I opted to get a bike shop build it for me. No headaches, and I know it was done right. The shifters work well, and the bike is fast. Overall, this is just a really good hardtail mountain bike with a rack, which is basically what a police bike is. At first I was just going to use it on pavement, but I think it would perform great on some actual mountain bike trails if they weren't too grueling. Smith and Wesson is very protective of their brand name, so I figured they wouldn't put their name on it if it was junk, and so far this is a quality piece of equipment.

 "Terrific Bike" 2007-08-09
By Brandon Shafer (Seattle, WA)
I was issued a Smith & Wesson Custom Police bike in 1998, while on the police force. That bike cost about $1,500. For $325, I bought the Smith & Wesson Perimeter bike from Amazon. It's a great bike and in the decade that has passed, the new Perimeter is better than the custom bike I was issued 9 years ago.

 "What a deal!" 2007-07-19
By John Kern (Albany, NY USA)
I got this bike about a month ago, and I am very happy with it.

Assembly was a bit of a pain...it comes with directions, but they're not entirely accurate nor complete. But with a little time and patience I was able to get it together, and I'm no engineer. Once together and adjusted, I was very happy with it. I'm 6'1", and this is the first bike I've had that felt large enough to be comfortable. It's a tall bike, but not very long, keeping the wheels close for a tight turn radius. I found the crankset took a bit to get used to, it's set farther back then most bikes I've ridden (almost directly under the seat) so it stresses the thighs a bit more than I'm used to, but it's nice to be basically upright and it does allow you to use a bit more body weight to push down. The components appear to be quality, the gears and brakes work perfectly right out of the box without adjustment, and the bike itself feels tight and solid. This isn't top of the line but it's sure not the bottom, if you're looking for a very solid bike at a very reasonable price I would highly recommend it.

"Good light duty mountain bike" 2007-07-06
By C. Fritz (Wisconsin)
I reviewed comparison articles before committing to this bike. My anticipated riding time was to be limited so I didn't feel the need to go high end. I did want a durable hybrid or mountain bike that would last. I found Amazon to be the bottom dollar seller, but be prepared. The assembly instructions suck. It was delivered in a nice small package so putting it together took a degree of patience and about one hours time. You are pretty much on your own and hopefully have some mechanical aptitude. Some parts were left over and some didn't fit, however overall once I consider the final product, I'm satisfied that I chose the right bike for my needs. It rides quiet and is comfortable, and after several derailleur adjustments it is a nice riding bike. Plus it looks cool. Don't expect it to be a true mountain bike though, just a good urban rider.
